Does the heat of summer have you wondering if you should keep up your workout?
The answer is of course you should! Make sure you are drinking water all day and not just pre and post workout. Here are some tips to keep in mind when you are working out in the heat:
1. Try to avoid working out during the hottest part of the day between 10 am-3pm (unless you are training for an event that takes place during this time). Workout in the early morning or in the evening during the summer heat.
2. Wear loose, light colored clothing. Lighter colors will help reflect the heat, cotton clothing will help with the evaporation of sweat.
3. Wear sunscreen every time you are outside whether you are working out or not.
4. Drink water throughout the day but especially make sure you are drinking water at least every 15 minutes during your workout.
5. Replenish your electrolyte and salt intake. The more you sweat the more you are losing so make sure to drink your favorite drink or snack that helps replenish electrolytes and salt. (some fruits and vegetables that can help you replenish that are high potassium fruits include banana, dates, raisins, coconut and avocado. Vegetable sources include spinach, beans, lentils and potato).
6. Choose workout areas or paths that are in the shade if you can.
7. Check the weather forecast and if there is a heat advisory it would be wise to take your workout indoors for the day.
8. Always listen to your body, if you are starting to feel dizzy or overheated stop working out immediately.

Remember to have fun and change it up! Instead of your normal workouts go for a swim or take a hike!
